Nick Allen: a poem

what a storm did

in that moment

before the rain came on when the light

fell to shimmering and it was too dark

to read at the table a great lack rushed

to fill the hesitation before quick light slid

silver bringing darkness now sky is

a tannery hung heavy with pelts dripping

row upon row a thing made for ravens

crouched under eaves we watch it pass

while exhausted trees gather themselves

Nick’s first collection the riding and his pamphlet the necessary line were both published by Half Moon Books, Otley. His recent collaboration with York based artist Myles Linley, between two rivers, was published by Maytree Press, Marsden.
