Sarah Dixon: a poem

Waiting in the tunnel

Each year

as I reached up on tiptoes

my fingers explored a new ledge.

My breath held in the darkness

between two daylights

until, one year,

my fingers felt the roof.

When I had to fold myself in half

to remain hidden

I lost interest in the game.
